the 2008 gift list

Enjoy my fourth annual list of web site discoveries made this past year. These will add enjoyment to your day, simplify your online life, and push the boundaries of your tech world. Until next year....

Holiday Tipping
The holidays always bring good cheer and fun, but along with the fun there is always anxiety, especially about tipping. Not sure what to tip the waiter, mailman, babysitter? Emily Post, as always, has the answer.

Museum Shopping for the Unique and Extraordinary
My favorites include
The Textile Museum
The Spy Museum
The National Building Museum
You'll discover dozens of others both online and where you live. I'd love to
hear your favorites.

Design Your Own Web Site for Pennies
The web templates at this company will rival anything a web designer can do for you -- at a fraction of the cost. Truly! Follow the simple directions and have your web site up and running in hours. If you want some fine tuning or don't want to do it yourself, hire your favorite web design professional. You'll still save hundreds of dollars and hours of time.

Infused Madadamia Oil
Brookfarms brings health to oil. Australian Macadamia oil is widely regarded as the healthiest edible oil in the world and is higher in monunsaturates than extra Virgin Olive oil. The oil can be cooked at very high temperatures without losing its subtle nutty taste and important health characteristics.

Fair Trade and Eco Friendly
These are buzz words for this year's giving. Check out my favorite virtual store. Let owner Reena Kazmann show you environmentally friendly home furnishings, accessories, crafts, clothing and wearable art made from natural and recycled materials.

Eat Slowly for a Change of Pace
The Slow Food movement has its roots in Rome, Italy. In 1986, there was resistance to the opening of a fast food chain near the Spanish steps. From these beginnings, Slow Food grew into what is now a global organization in over 122 countries. The Slow Food mission is to preserve the cultural cuisine and the associated food plants and seeds, domestic animals, and farming within an ecoregion. Find a Slow Food USA group near you.

Women in the Kitchen
This is Business Her Way after all, so why not eat where women are cooking?
Meet female chefs, restauraterus and food professionals here (click on Dining Guide to find a restaurant in your local area). Discover new recipes. Fill us in on the women cooking in your local area.

Ginger People
While Ginger People is not new to me this year, their sauces continue to be
my favorite shortcut for spicing up dishes -- and in this busy time while we watch our budgets, the Ginger People products will add a punch to any food gift you create.

A Family Story
Doris Lessing, author and not self-proclaimed feminist, has penned a fictional and actual telling of her parents' lives. In 2007, she won the Nobel Prize in Literature, the eleventh woman to win the prize in its 106-year history and also the oldest person ever to win the literature award. If you don't know her work, you should.

Twitter tools.
This gift could go on giving until the next millenium. So a few of my favorites:
Alltop, keeps you up with the latest Twitter news. It's an “online magazine rack” of popular topics.

Although I am on a Mac (this one is Mac-friendly), I use Twirl for keeping up with those I am following and who are following me. I like the small popup. Although the Mac one does have a great bird sound.

If you are curious about what's out there, here are are 60 or so and if you just have to have them all, here's another 140 plus.

Lists and Time Management
So how does one manage all that time connecting via Web 2.0 applications? I use posterous.com and tweetlater.com/ - both will simplify your blog and social media postings. And for that annual New Year goal setting, get some help by posting your goals publicly at 43Things.

Center for Women's Business Research launched this site, W-Biz Insight
a few years ago. If you have not joined (free), and are interested in participating in this online, national representative research panel of women business owners and policy makers, do join. They periodically send links to surveys and studies.
